When September Ends
When September Ends Life is back on the MIT track⦠I ended my most recent blog post with that. Hereâs what it means. Last week was Career Fair. The day when suits replace the sweatpants+baggy tee combos and everyone clutches a folder of resumes in the hopes of getting a dream job. There are always plenty of dreams in attendance. Check your âmost visitedâ website stats: Google, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, Dropbox, Amazon⦠Theyâre all here, ready to talk to you. They might even add your resume to the thick stack on their clipboards that are definitely over capacity. Some of those resumes will yield a coveted internship, job, or career. Thereâs SpaceX, 3M, Capital One, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) , Electronic Arts (EA), General Electric, Goldman Sachs, LâOreal, NASA, National Basketball Association (NBA), National Security Agency (NSA), OkCupid, Peace Corps, Samsung Electronics, The New York Times, U.S. Department of Energy⦠And 400 more. They come with catchy slogans like âDreamers welcomeâ or âWanted: insatiable curiosity.â They give out swag. Here, some stickers and pens and notebooks from Facebook. A Dropbox t-shirt. Bright Google sunglasses. You are now a walking advertisement. (For the most impressive collection of Career Fair swag, see Tales of my first Career Fair by Kevin S. 19) Regardless of job-acquisition chances, Career Fair is fun. A whole jolly bubble within the MIT bubble. You get to preview whatâs way ahead. The life beyond and outside MIT. Many recruiters are alumni. You might see yourself in them. Working the dream. Moving up. Outside, there are food trucks with long lines. Means thereâs free food. Exhibit patience and youâll get treats: ice cream, grilled cheese, and raspberry lemonade. Free food never fails. Back home, the Career Fair mood remains. Festive and agitated. Youâll hear, âHow many careers did you get?â and âHow did it go?â and âDid you talk to CompanyX? Do you think youâll apply?â ____________________ This weekend, a group of hall residents went to see The Martian. It was awesome! Not to spoil anything, but it features JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory). And two members of hall worked at JPL this summer! One of them also builds solar cars. Sheâs the solar car captain. Pretty awesome. Also, MIT is designing a skintight spacesuit akin to the one in the movie. I admit, I wanted to be an engineering major for at least an hour after the viewing. The Martian hit really close to home. _____________________ Yesterday, I submitted my first philosophy paper. Which felt quite odd. Ask me a year ago if Iâd study philosophy at Harvard, as well as read and write all the time, and Iâd cringe. âI wonât have to write any papers this semester. Yay!â I said then. Oops⦠I was so wrong. Today, I got a UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program). One Iâll describe later. Spoiler: Im very excited. Spoiler 2: I might get to speak to a fighter pilot and the Department of Education for it. What do they have in common? Coming soon. Other than that, things revolve around class and hall life, mostly. Essay season has passed. The leaves of paper have fallen into their designated slots. Iâm running out of binder space. There are also occasional Boston adventures. In Boston, there are cheap fruit, city lights, fun events, spontaneous performances, music, art, and theatre. But actually, you can find that at MIT as well. You can cozy up in your room or one of the lounges. Feel a part of a whole separate world. Thatâs what Iâll do right now. Goodbye

The Tragic Tale of Ophelia and Hamlet Essay - 1390 Words
The Tragic Tale of Ophelia and Hamlet The common problem of lack of communication has plagued couples since the beginning of time. The relationship Hamlet and Ophelia share in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Hamlet, is no more immune to these human tendencies. Throughout the drama, many misunderstandings cloud their relationship. Unspoken problems and pressures within Opheliaââ¬â¢s and Hamletââ¬â¢s private lives lead to overlooked, unnoticed love. For Hamlet, his bond with Ophelia pales in comparison to the weight of the les talionis obligation thrust upon his soul. Ophelia faces trouble of a different nature. Having been raised to be very obedient to her father and to let him think for her, she is coerced into pushing Hamlet away and notâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She refuses even to talk to him. Meanwhile, Hamlet is just learning of his fatherââ¬â¢s vicious murder and of his uncleââ¬â¢s treachery. The ghost of Hamletââ¬â¢s father comes one day to tell him that Claudius, his uncle, unknown to all, killed th e late king. This strikes a very deep blow to Hamlet. Already torn apart in grief and anger over the fact that Claudius has married the queen within one month of the kingââ¬â¢s death, these harsh realities put Hamlet at a very sensitive and troubling point in his life. What he needs most is trust and understanding from others. Thus when Ophelia turns away from him, he has no other choice but to accept the denial and let go of her, for he faces a much greater foe than lost love. Each struggling with inner turmoil, Hamlet and Ophelia, neither one knowing what the other is going through, are torn from each other. The second major misunderstanding comes with Hamletââ¬â¢s feigned madness. With the burden of killing the king and revenging his father weighing heavily on his soul, Hamlet tries to learn of his true friends. In examining Ophelia, he sees something in her face that he takes to mean betrayal and comes to the conclusion he can not trust her. In Opheliaââ¬â¢s description to her father, she reports, He raised a sigh so piteous and profound / As it did seem to shatter all his bulk / And end his being (2.2.91-93). Hamlet, thinking that Ophelia was in the plot with her father against him, has even more reason toShow MoreRelatedThe Theme Of Death And Death In Shakespeares Hamlet862 Words à |à 4 Pages In Hamlet, Shakespeare depicts the diffusion side of the problematic part in the life of the hero who recoils and leads to his death. Technician Qualities Essays - Computer Architecture, System Software
Technician Qualities Two of the most important qualities that a technician can have are active listening skills and attitude. Active listening means that you truly listen to what the person (who is having the problem)is saying. Having active listening skills involves good eye contact, nodding your head every nowand then to show you are following the conversation, taking notes on important details, and avoiding distractions such as incoming cell phone calls or other activities. Clarify customer statements by asking pertinent questions and avoid interrupting the customer. Allow customers to complete their sentences. Many technicians jump into a problem the moment they hear the first symptom described by the user. Listen to the entire problem. Do not act superior because you know terms and things that they do not. A positive attitude is probably the best quality a technician can possess. Many technicians treat customers abruptly, not taking the time to listen to their problem or to find the best solu- tion. A good attitude is helpful when a user is upset because their computer or attached device is not working properly. Do not undermine the customer's problem; every problem is equally important to the computer user. A positive attitude is critical for being successful in the computer service industry. A technician must be familiar with and thoroughly understand computer terminology to (1) speak intelligently to other technical support staff in clear, concise, and direct statements; (2) explain the problem to the user; and (3) be proficient in the field. The field changes so quicklythat technicians must constantly update their skills. Unfortunately, some computer technicians use the technical language of the trade when speaking with people who are not attuned to the lingo. Using too many technical terms aroundend users serves only to confuse and irritate them. A technician should avoid using slang, jargon, acronyms, and abbreviations. In addition to knowing and using the correct terminology, a technician must use it appropriately, and explain computer terms with simple, everyday language and examples.
